Blessed Sermon Series Notes Week 1

Gal. 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—

Gal. 3:14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (ESV)

Testimony: I have been following the Lord for 39 years now:

  • I first heard about being redeemed from the curse of the law 37 years ago
  • During these 37 years – I have experienced the blessings of God
  • Yet – a few times I experienced the opposite – I had physical conditions that weren’t blessings
  • Since I teach God’s goodness – I had the opportunity to feel embarrassed and even like a failure – (not possessing the blessing but instead experiencing something under the curse)

I had questions like:

  • What did I do wrong?
  • Is my faith week?
  • Am I redeemed from the curse?
  • Is it really true that I’m blessed?
  • Should I back off of God’s Word?

Also – if there is a delay receiving an answer:

  • Thoughts come – maybe God doesn’t want me to have it?

Let’s lay some foundation and then we’ll work off of that:

What is the curse of the law?

  • The laws of the covenant that God made with His people during the time of Moses is called the “Book of the Law”
  • The “Book of the Law” had to kept

Gal. 3:10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law and do them.” (ESV)

  • The law reveals to us what God’s standard of holy living is – what is right and wrong
  • His holiness is unattainable to mere flesh and blood
  • When someone fell short of keeping one point of the law – they broke the entire law
  • A curse would then come on them

The curse is NOT the Law:

  • The Law itself is perfect and holy
    • The law reveals what God considers holy

The curse was the consequence for not keeping the Law

The curse included:

  • Sickness of every kind
    • Physical and mental
    • Recurring sickness
    • Sickness of long continuance
  • Poverty, failure, defeat
  • Accident prone

Under the law:

  • These things came on people who didn’t do all that was written in the law

To be clear:

  • Jesus became sin (by taking our sin)
  • He took our penalty for sin upon himself
  • So, EVERY curse of the law was placed on Him
  • While walking on the earth Jesus knew no sickness
  • Jesus became acquainted with sin and sickness at His crucifixion
  • It was our sin and sickness He took

Jesus was cursed so we could be blessed:

  • He redeemed us from the curse by becoming a curse for us

The blessing of Abraham was secured for us – in and by Christ Jesus:

  • We are blessed because of Jesus

Definition of Blessing:

“An endowment of God’s beneficial power that gifts us with His goodness, permits and empowers us to do something, and brings wellbeing in every area of life”

Gen. 1:22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” (ESV)

Gen. 5:2 Male and female he created them, and He blessed them and named them Man when they were created. (ESV)

NOTE: immediately after creation we see NOTHING about a curse

  • God blessed – it was ONLY blessing
  • But – because of man’s decisions we see the curse entered in

Edith: Blessed to be a blessing

Blessings: (Deuteronomy 28)

  • Health
  • Prosperity, success
  • Victory
  • We are the head and not the tail
  • We will be above and not beneath

Practical Application

Ex. 34:7b But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations.” (NLT)

Research from a variety of fields affirms diseases and other problems can be passed down in family lines

Out of this scripture verse came: “generational curses”

  • When a challenge arises, is it a generational curse? Or genetics / DNA ?

Must these things be broken?

  • ANSWER – Jesus redeemed from the curse
  • The penalty of the curse is no longer on us
  • So, in the realm of God and the Holy Spirit – the work is done – the curse is already broken

Testimony: Prostate

  • My father dealt with it – cancer
  • My older brother – cancer
  • Around 10 years ago it showed up with me
  • Out of fear I ignored it
  • Fear doesn’t rid us of it
  • I eventually had to face my fear
  • In the end I was blessed – had no cancer

The Point:

  • If we know something that tracks in our family line
  • We don’t sit back and do nothing
  • We go on the offensive

Gal. 3:14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (ESV)

The difference between old and new:

  • Keep all the law and be blessed – “I’ll keep sickness off of you
  • So…if someone could keep the law – because of their works – the Lord kept sickness off of them

New Testament:

Resist the devil – he is like a roaring lion – seeking to devour – steadfast in the faith:

  • It’s not about our works – a performance of works
  • But it’s about our faith – an exercise of faith

James 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (NIV)

Norvel Hayes: Speak

We have been given authority

  • We exercise our authority
  • We use our faith

Blessed Sermon Series Notes - Week 2

The Blessing of Forgiveness

Romans 4:7 Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Romans 4:8 Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin. (WMB)

Matt. 1:20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Matt. 1:21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (NLT)

For he will…………save from Rome.

Something worse than slavery, injustice

For he will give you a castle on top of the hill

There’s something BETTER than wealth

Why is forgiveness the greatest blessing?

Not such a big deal? Sin is a big deal.

Everyone has sinned Rom 3:23

Sin – Hb and Gk – missing the mark,

Mark, bulls eye? – The way God intended The best.

Selfish choices. Right now.

Stumble – not a choice, a mistake. – still get hurt, hurt others

Everyone has sinned. Everyone needs forgiveness.

Look what it is

Forgive – to grant pardon for or remission of (an offense, debt, etc.); absolve.

Pardon – to release (a person) from liability for an offense.

You don’t hold that sin TO them.

When you think of that person, you don’t think of that sin.

Having a clear conscience

Free from guilt and shame – Shame is the driving force behind addictive behaviour, much depression, and self-destructive behaviour

Psa. 103:1 Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.

Psa. 103:2 Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

Psa. 103:3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.

Psa. 103:4 He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies.

Psa. 103:5 He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s! (NLT)

Eph. 4:32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

When did God forgive me? The same time He healed me.

When was that? Back in 1972? No. Back on the cross.

Heb 9: 14 “Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Heb 9:28 so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people……. NLT

Heb. 10:11 Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins.

Heb. 10:12 But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. (NLT)

Already paid for the sin and provided forgiveness.

Supplied an ocean of forgiveness.

Don’t have to beg for forgiveness.

But must be humble enough to know you need it

Heb. 4:16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. (NLT)

Humble enough to receive it.

Earn forgiveness?   Human. Not God.

It seems i keep doing the same sin over and over. Will God will get tired of forgiving me?

Ocean – glass of water

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV)

Is. 43:25 “I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again. (NLT)

Psa. 103:12 He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. (NLT)

Blessed Sermon Series Notes - Week 3

How does being blessed apply when we wake up tomorrow morning?

  • How does it apply to the school teacher?
  • The chippy? Sparky? GP? Lawyer? Surgeon? Business person? Painter? CEO? EVERYONE?
  • The Christian who is lost there way? The Christian who wants to get back on course?

Let’s first of all acknowledge:

  • We can live life from our learned intelligence only – (schooling and upbringing)
  • Learned skill sets and vocations

Yet, receiving Jesus as Lord:

  • Adds a SUPERNATURAL element to life on earth

Eph. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, (ESV)

It’s right there. A supernatural element:

  • Every spiritual blessing
  • It’s not just words on paper – it’s God’s life
  • It’s a tangible supernatural empowerment that we are blessed with as a result of accepting and confessing Jesus

  • I was getting by with what I learned
  • After I accepted Jesus as Lord
  • We were in a church meeting
  • Anointing fell – I played things on my bass one evening that I still can’t figure out how I did

The supernatural can work in conjunction with education or learned skill sets

STORY: Rachael – surgeon

STORY: 24-hour convenience store

  • Safety – Holy Spirit warned
  • Robbery – Holy Spirit alerted him
  • Geoff – How he trusted the Lord at work

Every person – in every sphere of life:

  • Parents at home – (He let me know things are daughters were going through)
  • The Holy Spirit can make uneducated people look really good
  • The Holy Spirit can elevate us in every way – IF we take advantage of every spiritual blessing

Eph. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, (ESV)

Not to be so spiritual minded – we’re no earthly good

What are some of the spiritual blessings?

  • New Life – born of God
  • The Fruits of the Spirit – Effects our character
  • A Supernatural Teacher – Shows us God’s Things
  • A Guide – He leads us and guides us
  • A New Language – Tongues
  • Supernatural Gifts – Power for ministry

It’s a PACKAGE – A Spiritual Package

Imagine God saying this to us:

“I am going to give you new life, my fruit producing spirit, a supernatural teacher, a supernatural guide, a supernatural language, and supernatural gifts”

How can these SPIRITUAL blessings help us daily on a NATURAL earth?

There isn’t time today to thoroughly look into each one of these:

  • So, we’ll quickly make mention of a few and look at a few more thoroughly

New Life – (Part of package)

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but in the measure of his mercy, he gave us salvation, through the washing of the new birth and the giving of new life in the Holy Spirit, (BBE)

  • Because of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
  • We became the house of God
  • The temple – tabernacle

We are the house of God – we came to this building to worship from the inside out

We brought the presence of God with us!

  • Not everyone was anointed in the O.T.
  • We’re all temples – we all have God
  • We are men and women anointed of God!

Misunderstanding: Everyone automatically acts like Christian

Prayer Fallacy: We can pray and ask God to make someone act like a Christian

Prayer Truth: We can pray the Ephesian prayer: That our bro/sis receive a spirit of wisdom and revelation in knowledge

STORY: In 1997, Charlie Sheen claimed that he was a born-again Christian.  Less than a year later, Sheen was back to his old ways. In 1998, he was hospitalized for a drug overdose.  Currently, Sheen doesn’t seem to follow any organized religion.

Practical Application: TEND to – new life IN us

  • If you’re a new Christian – attend a basics course – we have iBelieve

A Supernatural Teacher – (Part of package)

John 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

The spirit of God doesn’t talk about Himself or of topics of His own choosing:

  • Doesn’t say I, me, or my
  • Only takes the things of God – His Word and leads us into that truth

A Supernatural Guide – (Part of package)

Acts 8:29 The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” (NLT)

Acts 13:2 One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.” (NLT)

Acts 16:6 Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time.

Acts 16:7 Then coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed north for the province of Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there. (NLT)

We’ve had this happen with our go team and explosion days with both young and old!

A New Language – (Part of package)

1 Cor. 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. (ESV)

It’s been said many times:

  • This is the door – the gateway – Into the supernatural

STORY: Crane Operator

The Fruits of the Spirit – (Part of package)

Gal. 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Gal. 5:23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (ESV)

Though we’re complete – We still have to be transformed

  • The fruit enables transformation
  • It’s supernatural – it isn’t behaviour modification
  • But supernatural transformation

Before Christ: – Everything was regular / normal / ordinary

  • Our love (out of head and emotions) – our joy (listen to a comedian to get happy or get drunk) – our peace – our patience – our kindness

After Christ: Everything becomes supernatural / extraordinary / distinctive

The fruits of the spirit in us are designed to overcome the works of our flesh

DOCTORS SAY: Good health starts in our gut

  • Jesus said out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water
  • Good spiritual health starts in our guts
  • The fruits of the spirit are working on the inside – and they change us on the outside

The flesh: (triggers)

  • Anger – hurt – strife – jealousy – immorality – witchcraft – drunkenness

The fruits can get buried in the dirt:

  • Because we live in the flesh we can’t get it out of the way – it will always be there
  • The fruits of the spirit are ALWAYS there too
  • They are the power behind transformation

John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (ESV)

Three things that help us bear fruit:

  • The Fruit in Us
  • Knowledge of the Fruit
  • Time with the Lord

The Fruit in Us

  • God imparts His Spirit
  • The package includes the fruit of the Spirit
  • God does this – it’s not on us to do
    • The fruits are tangible and real – they begin to affect us – we know we’re different

Knowledge of the Fruit

  • We gain knowledge of the fruit
  • We know – I have kindness in me – I have joy in me – I have peace in me
    • It’s always our choice to yield to the fruit – God won’t force us

Time with the Lord

  • In our communion He points things out
  • We can ask Him things
    • Pasty – went to Him about me – something she didn’t like – he brought something up to her that she could change
