Week 1 – Ps Tony Cameneti

Breast Plate of Righteousness

The book of Ephesians has 6 chapters:

The first 3 chapters tell us where we are, who we are, what we have:

  • We’re saved by grace through faith
  • We’re seated in heavenly places
  • We’re blessed with all spiritual blessings
  • We’re His workmanship created for good works

The final 3 chapters give us practical instructions:

  • Put off the old man – put on the new man
  • Let him that stole steal no more
  • Put away lying and speak the truth
  • Husbands love your wives
  • Be tender hearted forgiving one another

We’re first informed of where we are and afterwards told to live and work from that place

We’re first informed of what we have and afterwards told to use it

We’re first informed of who we are and afterwards told to act like it

We then come to the final chapter:

Eph. 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

Eph. 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Eph. 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Eph. 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Eph. 6:14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Eph. 6:15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

Eph. 6:16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;

Eph. 6:17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

Eph. 6:18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, (ESV)

Pieces of Armour:

  • The Belt of Truth
  • The Breastplate of Righteousness
  • The Shoes
  • The Shield of Faith
  • The Helmet of Salvation
  • The Sword of the Spirit

Thoughts:

  • God designed and gave us the armour
  • Yet, we take it up and use it
  • The armour was designed for spiritual warfare not for a flesh and blood fight
  • With the armour the Christian can do spiritual battle and win
  • We’re told to be strong in the Lord – taking up the armour is not of our own strength
  • The armour is designed for both offense and defence

Today we would call the breastplate a bulletproof vest:

  • Hence, we are calling this series: “bulletproof”

Eph. 6:14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, (NKJV)

Eph. 6:14the body armor of God’s righteousness. (NLT)

Eph. 6:14…righteousness like armor on your chest, (CSB)

The purpose of the vest:

  • The purpose of a bulletproof vest is to protect the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines and other vital organs
  • The vital organs from being shot

We’re told to put on the breastplate of righteousness:

  • Today’s equivalent is a bullet-proof vest

It’s in the Name

Eph. 6:14the body armor of God’s righteousness. (NLT)

We know this from the name:

  • God designed a piece of armour for us
  • The armour is called righteousness
  • And it will protect us

What makes it bullet proof?

  • When I was much younger – the Beatles became the biggest thing
  • I wanted to play the drums
  • So, I used “my” resources to make a drumkit

That’s the best the “I” could do:

  • my ability at the time – my knowledge – my skills – my resources

But there were BIG Corporations that had LOTS of skills, resources, ability

I went ahead and made my own bullet proof vest:

  • my resources, ability, skills, knowledge

Here is what happens when vests are made out of inferior contractors with inferior materials:

Again, there are BIG Corporations that have LOTS of skills, resources, ability…

They work and protect those that were them:

  • What happens when we put on a vest made of our own righteousness?

Here’s a description of our righteousness:

Is. 64:6 We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind. (NLT)

Israel tried to obtain righteousness:

Rom. 9:31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. (ESV)

Many rejected Jesus and continued in their own way:

Rom. 10:3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. (ESV)

Our understanding and beliefs of whether it is God’s or ours:

  • Determines how we put it on

If we see this bulletproof breast as our own righteousness:

  • We put it on a certain way

If we see it as God’s righteousness

  • We put it on in a different way:

If we see this bulletproof breast as our own righteousness:

  • We put it on a certain way

Example: (Rollercoaster)

  • Self-Righteous:
    • I am doing everything just like God instructed – so I approach you based on how awesome I am Lord
    • I come to you Lord and I am proud to say I am living holy – so I expect you to answer my prayer based on my good living
  • Guilt Ridden:
    • Lord I have missed it time and time again – I don’t deserve anything from you because I am such a bad person
    • I have no joy – please don’t be angry with me because of my behaviour

Our personal goodness or behaviour would be a weak piece of armour – a bulletproof vest with holes in it

If we see it as God’s righteousness

  • We put it on in a different way:

Rom. 5:17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. (ESV)

We can receive Jesus’ perfect life as a bulletproof vest

Lord I come BOLDY to you throne room of grace:

  • To find mercy, help, and grace
  • I’m not here based on my goodness, but based on the perfect life of my saviour Jesus Christ
  • His blood cleanses me from sin and I refuse guilt, shame, and condemnation
  • My heart and vital organs are protected – because I understand it’s Jesus’ work that makes me righteous and gives me access

Acts 13:38 Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,

Acts 13:39 and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
