John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

John 16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;

John 16:10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;

John 16:11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. (ESV)

Within these 5 verses are some key building block truths:

Looking more closely at verse 9:

John 16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; (ESV)

Q: What is Jesus saying here?

Have you ever thought you did something great – but you actually didn’t:

John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

John 16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; (ESV)

The Holy Spirit first convicts the sinner to believe in Jesus:

God first fixes US from crashing – from sinking to our eternal death:

It Works Best This Way

Here are some scriptures that lay out His plan:

Rom. 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (ESV)

Rom. 2:4 Or is it that you think slightingly of His infinite goodness, forbearance and patience, unaware that the goodness of God is gently drawing you to repentance? (WEYMTH)

Big Idea: God Chose Goodness to Lead Sinners to Change

Here is the perfect picture of goodness speaking loudly:

Luke 5:4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Luke 5:5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

Luke 5:6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.

Luke 5:7 They signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. (ESV)

Jesus just demonstrated kindness – goodness to these men – worked a miracle

For some reason sailors – people who were out at sea were described as ruff and tuff – cursers:

Luke 5:8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

What a perfect example of how goodness – kindness lead him to repentance:

Jesus didn’t dish out heavy truths to Peter:

John 16:9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; (ESV)

Summary:

The Holy Spirit doesn’t work with guilt or condemnation, however the devil will use it to magnify sin to the people we are trying to reach.

Jesus became our substitute; He took our sin:

By believing in Him here is what happens:

NO! There was THE sin problem – THE Sin nature of man – if by nature you are a sinner – then you sin…Right?

Love used correctly on the unsaved doesn’t:

Kindness not anger:

Titus 3:3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.

Titus 3:4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour appeared,

Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

Titus 3:6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, (ESV)

People do not have to clean themselves up in order to believe in Jesus – He cleans us up after we believe!

Everyone is invited to come as they are, and to freely receive of the wells of salvation.
