AN ON AND OFF: “Things That Produce Stability” – DIFFERENT THINGS WILL BE SHARED

My belief system wasn’t formed correctly – the good news is…

INTRO: Let’s look into something that formed a belief system that spread to many different groups of people

TODAY: Protection and Provision Then and Now

At 120 years old, Moses addressed a new generation of Israelites – which was recorded for us in the book of Deuteronomy:

The Jews refer to the book as Mishneh Hattorah which is interpreted – “The Repetition of the Law” – (Deuteronomy 17:18)

Please notice the protection and provision either promised to or taken from the people:

Protection and provision promised and provided

Deut. 28:1“And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.

Deut. 28:2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God.

Deut. 28:3 Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field.

Deut. 28:4 Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock.

Deut. 28:5 Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

Deut. 28:6 Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. (ESV)

Protection and provision removed:

Deut. 28:15 “But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you.

Deut. 28:16 Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field.

Deut. 28:17 Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

Deut. 28:18 Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock.

Deut. 28:19 Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

Deut. 28:20 “The LORD will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in all that you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and perish quickly on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken me.

Deut. 28:21 The LORD will make the pestilence stick to you until he has consumed you off the land that you are entering to take possession of it.

Deut. 28:22 The LORD will strike you with wasting disease and with fever, inflammation and fiery heat, and with drought1 and with blight and with mildew. They shall pursue you until you perish. (ESV)

Deut. 28:47 Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things,

Deut. 28:48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything. And he will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you. (ESV)

Referring to our subject matter: Protection and Provision Then and Now

Q: How was P&P attained and how was it lost?

A: It was attained by works (good deeds) – performance (obedience is another way to say it) – and it was lost by a lack of works/performance/good deeds – (disobedience)

Remember these

2 of those in particular can be derived from the law of Moses:

Here are some important truths from Duet 28 – (the law)

Both the Old and New Covenants contain instruction about the covenants. How they work, and what governs them?

The belief systems of many human being – (that are not Jewish or Christian – but simply people alive on the earth)

Q: What about now? How does it work now? What is our part? What is God’s part?

One: Christ Redeemed Us from the Curse of the Law

Deut. 11:26 “See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse:

Deut. 11:27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God…

Deut. 11:28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God…(ESV)

OT Laws have blessings and cursing’s.

Gal. 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—

Gal. 3:14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (ESV)

What is our focus “now” verses “then”?

This covenant blessings aren’t earned – brings us to…

Two: All Spiritual Blessings are Gifted to Us

Eph. 1:3 Blessed [is] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who did bless us in every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, (YNG)

Three: We Are Given the Responsibility to Access Grace

Rom. 5:2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and werejoice in hope of the glory of God. (ESV)

Know how to approach God “now” verses “then”

PIC – GRAPHIC

What about our behaviour/performance/works?

Rom. 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

Rom. 6:2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? (ESV)

Four: We Keep the Devil Off of Ourselves

1 Pet. 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1 Pet. 5:9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. (ESV)
